On today’s episode Lyn gives some tips for staging your home, and we share a few guidelines to help get you moving in the right direction. We also chat books — what we’re reading and about to pick up.
And don’t forget about our up and coming Gift Giving Guide! We’re in the process of preparing for our lists now (we’re ahead of the game, obviously!), so please send us some of your favorite artisans, etsy shops, small businesses, whatever. We’d love to feature you or one of your favorites! We also love to shop with purpose, so if there is a mission trip or adoption fund or some other specialty items we could feature that will also help another in return, we’d love to hear about them. Send your favs to info@bydesignpodcast.com
Thanks so much for listening!

HOME STAGING TIPS:
QUIET THE SPACE
- This means taking everything off your walls, off your shelves. This will help you weed out the clutter and showcase the items that are actually fabulous or mean something.
- Maybe have another set of eyes help you visualize your space. Perhaps a friend who is gifted in this area or has a home styled the way you like. Or hire a designer, like us 😉
DECORATE IN LAYERS
- For instance, if you’re working on staging a bookcase, start at the back. Find something higher, like a vase of tall flowers or piece of art to place at the back.
- Consider visual weight too. Try to balance the placement of your decor. Not everything has to be symmetrical, and sometimes it’s better if it’s not. You can use a large item on one side of a mantle or tablescape, and balance it by using a stack of books on the other side.
HANG CURTAINS
- So many people skip this or don’t hang them right, and it can make or break your space!
- Hang the rod higher than the window trim if you can and wider — as high as you can! But don’t forget to take into account the length of your curtains. You want them to either puddle or just kiss the floor.
- Use flat bedsheets as curtains! (Refer to back to Episode #2 for all the info on this.) This is an easy way to get window treatments without spending a fortune.
LESS IS MORE
- You don’t have everything out at once. Pack it in bins and then switch it up every couple months. That will keep you from getting bored and give you a chance to showcase everything you love without cluttering the space.
GET AN AREA RUG
- It will ground your furniture and define your space a little more.
ARRANGE YOUR FURNITURE OFF THE WALLS
- Pulling the furniture in and grounding it with a rug creates a cozy and intimate space.
